Ceremonies

An interesting read...

Many types of ceremonies for significant events have been celebrated and recorded since the dawn of time.  They are not only celebrated within the family unit but in the wider community and are recognised in every culture around the world.

Looking back at ancient times, in the days of the Pharaohs, a wedding ceremony was the uniting of two people and in ancient times this was believed to be a sacred bond.  The ancient Egyptians were the first people to regard marriage as a legal relationship.  There would be an ‘engagement period’ where not only an agreement would be drawn up but also a dowry paid and a gift of either gold or precious stone would be given to the bride from the groom.  On the wedding day, the bride would wear a long dress or tunic made out of linen and adorn herself with any precious stones, gold or lapis she may have.  A contract would be signed and even though there was no official celebration, the family would indeed celebrate with much food, music and dancing.

Much has evolved since those times however the similarities continue to exist: 

• We also believe in an engagement period, wherein the bride-to-be accepts a gift (engagement ring) from her fiancé.
• Leading up to and during the ceremony, legal paperwork is completed, thus representing a legally binding contract in marriage.
• In today’s society, a marriage is highly regarded as a sacred bond between two people.
• A celebration to mark the special occasion is shared with close friends and family.

 It should be mentioned, that in many cultures a dowry is still paid.

Regardless of the ceremony type, it is important to recognise and celebrate your special event.  To honour those age old traditions passed down and to teach our children the importance and significance of celebrating.
